Dance without limits

Find your rhythm

Ballet, jazz or contemporary: where do you begin?

A starting point for the dance-curious. Follow the music, the movement—and the class that meets you where you are.

You do not have to find your forever style before you begin. A class is a chance to discover what you like. The teacher, level and atmosphere can matter just as much as the name on the timetable.

Here are three starting points. These are broad descriptions; individual classes can feel very different, so check the teacher’s description before booking.

Ballet: structure and detail

Ballet often appeals to people who enjoy working carefully on technique. An introductory class may include work at the barre, exercises in the centre and short combinations. You build a vocabulary of positions and movements over time.

If you are completely new, look for an explicit beginner or introductory class. “Open” does not always mean suitable for a first-ever lesson. Ask how much previous knowledge the class assumes.

Jazz: musicality and character

Jazz covers a wide range of approaches. A class may combine a warm-up, technical exercises and a routine, with different teachers drawing on different musical and performance traditions.

Look at the actual class description rather than assuming every jazz class will have the same feel. If the music makes you want to move, that is a useful place to start your curiosity.

Contemporary: expression and exploration

Contemporary dance includes many techniques and approaches. Depending on the class, you might work with weight, space, floor work, travelling phrases or improvisation.

Ask what a typical lesson involves. A beginner contemporary class and an experienced dancers’ class may be very different experiences, even when they share the same label.

Choose an experience you can actually attend

A style that interests you, taught at a suitable level, at a time and place you can manage is a good first experiment. Check the practical details: duration, booking, price, clothing and any equipment.

You are allowed to try more than one style. You are also allowed to love the first one. Let your experience shape your preference rather than waiting until you can predict it perfectly.
